Alfred Capelle and Byron Bender Endowed Scholarship Fund (System)
By establishing this endowment, Byron and Lois Bender are providing perpetual funding for the annual Alfred Capelle and Byron Bender Scholarship established at the University of Hawai'i Foundation in September 2002 by Robert Barclay, author of the book Melal which translates to "Playground of Demons". His book is about people in the Marshall Island and how they survived the horror of nuclear testing, western arrogance, and domination. Dr. Byron Bender has researched the languages of Micronesia, where he spent most of a decade before joining the University of Hawai'i faculty. He is credited with the discovery of unique and distinctive aspects of the sound system of the language of the Marshall Islands, has produced (together with three co-authors from the islands) a Marshallese-English dictionary, and is currently working on a reference book on Marshallese grammar. Much of his research in recent years has focused on Micronesian as a subgroup within the Austronesian language family (coordinate, for example, with Polynesian); This has involved the collection of a large computerized database of cognates in Micronesian languages. Alfred Capelle is a Marshallese educator, the former Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Ambassador to the UN, and co-author with Dr. Bender of the Marshallese-English dictionary. The purpose of this fund is to assist students from the Marshall Islands to attend the University of Hawai'i. Criteria

The endowment will honor, in perpetuity, Anna S. Sloggett, who taught elementary school children for 35 years on Kaua'i. She inspired her students with creative and innovative teaching methods which many of her students to this day still remember; out-of-the-ordinary field trips; exposing students to culture and fostering imagination were key. Anna celebrated her 100th birthday on September 17, 2006. Her hope was that the endowment would help would-be teachers foster creative ways to benefit the children of the future. She said, "I'd hope that girls and boys that are going to be teachers would be fond of children and want to give them an opportunity to have something to look forward to in life."

Ipo Bullard Memorial Scholarship
Patrick and Janet Bullard both attended the University of Hawai'i. Patrick attended Windward Community College and UH Manoa, grew up on the Windward side, and has a great affinity for Windward Community College. Janet attended UH Manoa and is a longtime volunteer in various roles supporting the university since she graduated. They are both proud alumni and believe strongly in providing opportunities for students to access higher education in appreciation for the education they both received from the University of Hawai'i. Ipo Bullard was the beloved Jack Russell Terrier and 'child' of Patrick and Janet Bullard. She had a beautiful spirit, exuded so much positive energy, and very sensitive to the needs of others. She was strong and independent yet so loving. She transformed many bad days into amazing ones with a simple hug and lick on the knee or face. She never thought of herself as a small dog, rather thought she was a Rottweiler or Bull Mastiff. She feared nothing and even in her old age remained strong in spirit bringing so much joy to our family. This scholarship honors Ipo and all who love animals. The Bullards want to honor her memory by helping those who have chosen to care for animals in their careers. Animals don't have a voice and only we can be the voice for them. The purpose of this fund is to assist students in the Veterinary Technology Program at Windward Community College. Criteria

Karen Elaine Chandler Endowed Scholarship Fund for Hawaiian Studies, Dance, and Music (UH System)
The purpose of this Fund is to provide scholarships to assist undergraduate students pursuing a degree or certificate at any University of Hawai‘i campus in Hawaiian Studies, Hawai‘i Performing Arts, Hawaiian Culture, Hawaiian Language and related fields, excluding Hawaiian Botany and Hawaiian Health and Healing. Funds shall be used for all costs associated with attendance (e.g. tuition, books, fees, etc.). The scholarships shall be known as “The Karen Chandler Scholarships”.
The scholarship fund aims to support students who have a strong focus in their studies on Hawaiian dance or the combination of Hawaiian dance and music. (The scholarship fund is, however, not intended to support students whose primary focus is on music only.) It is recognized that the practice and understanding of Hawaiian dance and music cannot be acquired only at the university level. The scholarship fund will therefore give preference to students with significant experience in halau or other forms of study and performance of hula and mele. In doing so, the scholarship fund aims to make a contribution towards the wider efforts at the university and elsewhere to preserve and revitalize those elements of Hawaiian culture rooted in and expressed through dance and music. In this way, the Donor is honoring Karen Chandler’s wish to express her thanks for the cultural enrichment she received through her contact with Hawaiian culture. Criteria i. Recipients must be full-time or part-time, undergraduate students pursuing a degree or certificate at any University of Hawai‘i campus in Hawaiian Studies, Hawai‘i Performing Arts, Hawaiian Culture, Hawaiian Language and related fields, excluding Hawaiian Botany and Hawaiian Health and Healing.
ii. Recipients shall have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or above.
iii. Financial need shall be a criterion in making this award although not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines. All things being equal, the student(s) with the most financial need shall be selected.
Preference
i. Students who actively participate in halau, mele study/composition and mele performance (haku mele, olapa, and ho‘opa‘a), or other cultural activities that preserve, revitalize, and perpetuate the puana (essence/theme) of Native Hawaiians through mele and hula, as self-reported.
The number and amount of awards shall be determined by the selection committee based on the availability of funds. It is the Donor’s intent that as many students as possible be assisted and that scholarship award amounts not exceed $1,000 per recipient per academic year, with a lifetime maximum of $5,000 per recipient (these amounts can be adjusted for inflation and endowment value growth). Recipients are eligible for scholarship renewal so long as all criteria are met and so long as students demonstrate continued enrollment in Hawaiian dance and music courses and continue to participate actively in halau or other forms of study and performance of hula and mele. 296241, 202635, 202636, 202638, 202639, 202640, 202641, 202642 |

Lloyd and Barbara Amundson Endowed Scholarship Fund (UHMC)
In the early 1990's the Amundsons had a discussion about how lucky they had been and what they might do to return something to society. They both grew up in the Minnesota boondocks and came from very economically poor families. It was the middle of the Great Depression. Lloyd's family didn't have electric lights until he was 13 years old or indoor plumbing and running water until he was 20. When Lloyd graduated from high school in 1943, the country was in the middle of World War II and nine of the ten males in his class immediately were inducted into the military. Lloyd chose the Navy and after some tests was transferred to the Navy Air corps. Following training, Lloyd had his first exposure to Hawai'i at Pearl Harbor. After his discharge, Lloyd entered college on the GI bill. Barbara and he married one year after graduation, and in September 2008 celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.
